The Staff Memorial
Plaza was formally dedicated on April 20, 1992, with a bronze plaque placement
and a tree planting. Although Chancellor
Rosemary Schraer was scheduled to dedicate
this plaza, her untimely passing led to
then Executive Vice Chancellor Fleischer
presiding over the ceremony.
The plaza was originally
located next to the Geology building but
was moved slightly to the West with the
addition of the Science Laboratories I building next
to Geology. This area has been
specifically dedicated for the recognition
and remembrance of UCR staff members.
Memorial Markers |
The pathways leading to the center of the plaza will
be lined with engraved markers "In
memory of" career staff who passed away during active employment at UCR. Markers
will continue to be placed annually
as needed. |

Memorial Bricks |
To
ensure that all UCR staff members
have the opportunity for recognition
and/or remembrance, it is intended
that the pathway in the plaza be slowly
replaced with engraved bricks purchased
by and for current and/or former
career and casual
staff members. At present, the area
has sufficient room to place approximately
8,000 or more engraved bricks. |
The sale of
bricks is intended to be ongoing. All
bricks will be red and measure approximately
2 1/2" x 4" x 8". They
will be cemented in place starting around
the center area near the Dedication Plaque.
Download a PDF of the application to purchase a brick.
The brick sale is open
to anyone who wishes to purchase bricks,
which may be inscribed for personal use,
such as a home pathway or patio or gift
paperweight.
However, placement in
the pathway is limited to bricks inscribed
for current and former career or casual
UCR staff only. Only bricks purchased
through the Staff Memorial Committee may
be placed in the plaza.
All bricks will contain
a color grouting to enhance the inscription(s).
Inscriptions are limited to two lines
containing 20 letters, symbols and spaces
per line or 24 letters, symbols and spaces
in a condensed mode. All inscriptions
are subject to Staff Memorial Committee
approval. An example of an inscription
might be a staff member's name and the
dates of service or department at UCR,
for example:
John
B. Smith
1971
- 1995
or
John
B. Smith
Entomology
